Google has revealed that the M stands for Marshmallow. Yesterday Google posted on their official blog, about the 'Official Android 6.0 SDK & Final M Preview'.

The final Android 6.0 SDK is now available to download via the SDK manager in the Android Studio. Developers are allowed to update their apps on the Google Play Store with the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.
